Euro Truck Simulator 2 and ATS to Get Improved Physics with Update 1.58 - Games Will Become More Realistic
The developers of the Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator driving simulators continue to tease the new features of update 1.58. Recently, they showed off a new training module, and now they have talked about physics improvements:
[...] The physics simulation has been significantly improved. This includes the behavior of vehicles, their reaction to your actions, as well as the handling of collisions and contacts with the environment.
To implement the plan, SCS Software "looked under the hood" and revised some of the fundamental principles of physics modeling in ETS 2 and ATS. Adjustments were made taking into account new categories of vehicles (modes with travel on buses and ordinary cars are being prepared for the games).
The reaction to gas has been improved: it is now correctly calculated based on the throttle torque map:
In combination with a more realistic level of engine resistance when the throttle is released, this makes coasting more natural and gives a smoother, more plausible ride.
They also add nuances to the behavior of the truck on different surfaces:
The wheels now have more camber when driving off-road, which better reflects the behavior of a suspension with a solid axle, and the turning wheels take into account the angle of inclination of the axis of rotation. These are small details, but they contribute to a more authentic feeling when the terrain becomes uneven or you deviate from perfectly flat roads. The sound you hear while driving has also been refined: turbocharger sounds now more accurately reflect what the engine is doing, making the overall driving feedback more connected.
The developer also wanted to improve throttle behavior when using a keyboard. For this, a "dual throttle control system" was developed.
Now holding down the throttle key gives partial throttle, allowing you to accelerate smoothly and controllably and enter a relaxed driving mode more easily. When you need more power — for example, to overtake or climb a hill — simply "double-tap" the throttle key to activate full acceleration. After completing the overtaking or climbing to the top, simply release the key and press it again to return to partial throttle.
The release date for update 1.58 for Euro Truck Simulator 2 has not yet been announced.
