In the Russian box office, the adaptation of Silent Hill 2 by Christophe Gans started in second place.
The first information regarding the financial results of "Return to Silent Hill" has appeared — the third film in the movie franchise and the second film by director Christophe Gans.
In the USA, "Return to Silent Hill" grossed only $1.6 million on its premiere day, becoming the weakest start in the series' history — lower than the figures of the 2006 original ($8.1 million) and the 2012 sequel ($3.6 million). According to forecasts, the weekend will bring the film no more than $4.5 million. At the same time, the picture was released in only 1,850 theaters and received predominantly negative reviews from critics: 16% "freshness" on Rotten Tomatoes, 30 points on Metacritic, and 4.3 out of 10 on IMDb.
At the same time, in Russia, "Return to Silent Hill" showed a strong start. The film's premiere took place on January 22, and during its debut weekend, it managed to earn about 175.8 million rubles (approximately $2.5 million at the exchange rate on 25.01), which was the second result at the box office for the period from January 22 to 25 — after "Cheburashka 2", which collected 195.4 million rubles.
Thus, "Return to Silent Hill" has already become one of the highest-grossing foreign horror films of recent times among movies that received an official release in Russia. According to expert estimates, the film's total box office receipts could reach 500 million rubles.
For comparison: the original "Silent Hill" (2006) grossed $3.5 million in Russia, and "Silent Hill: Revelation" (2012) grossed $13.1 million over its entire theatrical run.
