The film "Return to Silent Hill", directed by Christophe Gans based on Silent Hill 2, had the weakest opening in the history of film adaptations of the cult horror series. The film was released in theaters last week and grossed only $3.2 million in the US in its first few days, which became a kind of franchise record.
For comparison, the original "Silent Hill" in 2006 earned $20.2 million at the start, and the sequel "Silent Hill 2" in 2012 earned $8 million.
Nevertheless, Gans is not going to put an end to the history of film adaptations. In an interview with Variety, the director said that if possible, he would like to return to Silent Hill again. According to him, he perceives this universe not just as a video game, but as modern art — dark, experimental and unusual. Gans noted that the series still has strong and very different chapters that deserve a separate film adaptation, and added that, despite criticism, many viewers consider his view of this world successful.
