PS5 surpasses PS3 in sales and prepares for new records - media
It seems that PlayStation 5 has surpassed its legendary predecessor, the PS3, in terms of total units sold.
According to VGChartz, by the end of December, PS5 had sold approximately 89.44 million units, while PS3 reached 87.40 million after many years on the market. The success of PS5 is impressive, considering that the console launched in November 2020, while PS3 took significantly longer after its release in 2006–2007.
The main contribution to record sales was made by Western markets. In Europe, 31.71 million consoles were sold, led by Germany (6.19 million), the United Kingdom (5.59 million), and France (5.08 million). In North America — 31.67 million, and in Japan — 7.33 million, where PS3 historically still remains ahead with 10.47 million.
Now that PS5 has surpassed PS3, it is aiming for new records. The next target is Nintendo Wii (101.63 million), then the first PlayStation (102.49 million), and its immediate predecessor, PS4, with 117.20 million units sold.
