Guerrilla just wanted to try something different.
Horizon Hunters Gathering was recently announced. In the new installment of the franchise, players are invited to team up and go hunting for deadly machines together.
The trailer did not impress many players — it received thousands of dislikes, and some have already dubbed it "Concord 2" (the online shooter was also actively criticized online and was shut down shortly after release).
Guerrilla studio director Jan-Bart Van Beek made a statement:
I want to make it clear: we love creating single-player games and will definitely continue to do so. [Single-player games] are a huge part of who we are as a studio. But we have long had a dream to try something new — to imagine how you can explore the world of Horizon together, as part of a team of machine hunters.
