While Paul W. S. Anderson is preparing an official film adaptation, Uwe Boll has announced the launch of a crowdfunding campaign for his own project in the universe.
The film is titled 23 Years Later: Return to Zombie Island. Boll stated directly that he cannot use the House of the Dead brand because the rights belong to SEGA. However, the director did not explain the choice of the title with an obvious reference to the \"28... Later\" franchise.
The new project is positioned as a \"spiritual sequel\" to the 2003 film, which at the time was heavily criticized and is still considered one of the lowest-rated video game adaptations.
Despite weak box office and devastating reviews, Boll claims that the film has gained cult status over time. He also said that he contacted the original actors, but did not specify whether anyone agreed to return.
At the time of publication, the IndieGoGo campaign has raised about $6.4 thousand with a stated goal of 20 thousand Canadian dollars.
Meanwhile, the official film adaptation directed by the director of \"Resident Evil\" continues to acquire details. The main role will be played by Isabella Merced (\"The Last of Us\"), and the film itself is seen as the start of a new franchise, which SEGA expects no less than the \"Sonic the Hedgehog\" series.
