In a new interview with Deadline, Constantin Film head Oliver Berben revealed that the studio had essentially given Zach Cregger complete creative carte blanche when working on the new Resident Evil adaptation. According to him, Cregger received a "clean slate" and the freedom to do whatever he sees fit with the intellectual property, thanks to his reputation as one of the strongest modern horror directors.

The film will appear on the big screens on September 18, 2026, and is currently in the editing stage. Berben noted that what he saw is "very far from anything related to Resident Evil", as Cregger brings his own unique style to the project.

Earlier, Cregger reported that the film will be a completely original story and will not be directly related to the usual characters of the series. In particular, Leon Kennedy, one of the iconic heroes of the franchise, will not appear in the film.
