One of the creators of Path of Exile and the game’s lead designer, Chris Wilson, published a video analyzing the Reign of the Warlock expansion for the Diablo II remaster. In it, he shared both praise and restrained criticism.

According to Wilson, Diablo II is an "exceptional game that launched the entire action RPG genre". He noted that the Resurrected team treated the project’s legacy with care, separating the changes into a distinct "New Era." Players will be able to choose for each character whether to use the updated version or remain in the classic era before Reign of the Warlock.

Commenting on the decision to make the new class and gameplay improvements paid content, Wilson suggested that the goal was not so much to increase sales as to preserve the "museum" version of the original. In his view, limiting the innovations to the boundaries of the "New Era" demonstrates respect for Diablo II’s historical legacy.

At the same time, the designer expressed doubts about the absence of a new act, storyline, and region to explore. He acknowledged that creating a full-fledged act would have required too much time and millions of dollars, yet it was precisely that kind of content that could have reliably brought a broader audience back to the game.

Without a new act, Wilson believes, the expansion is effectively reduced to a new class, quality-of-life improvements, and changes to the endgame—that is, content aimed primarily at active fans of the franchise. As a result, the Warlock class itself is supposed to become the main factor capable of selling the update.
