At launch, Highguard showed respectable concurrent player numbers on Steam, but it was unable to retain its audience. Players quickly left the project, microtransactions generated minimal revenue, and reviews turned out to be negative. Despite the developers’ confidence that they had sufficient financial reserves to continue improving the game, investor Tencent unexpectedly stopped funding. As a result, most of the approximately 100 employees were laid off.

According to Bloomberg, fewer than two dozen remaining developers are now continuing work on Highguard. Recently, they assured the community that they are preparing a new patch after a technical malfunction on the website led players to assume that the game was going to be shut down permanently.
