The adaptation of the cult beat 'em up is in a production deadlock.
The Streets of Rage adaptation is in limbo. Project screenwriter Derek Kolstad, known for the "John Wick" series, stated that the film is still being developed within Lionsgate, but work on it is not actually progressing. In an interview, he described the current state of the project as "actively inactive" — formally, development has not stopped, but there are no noticeable movements.
At the same time, the screenwriter emphasizes that he still believes in the project. He noted that he spent a lot of time on the script and considers it a solid foundation for a future film adaptation. According to him, the concept of the film is built around continuous action: the story should unfold almost without pauses and resemble a mixture of "16 Blocks" and "The Raid."
Kolstad wrote the script long before the studio joined the project. Since Lionsgate took over the film in 2022, almost nothing has been heard about it, which raises doubts that the film adaptation will eventually make it to the screens.
