Recently, Baldur's Gate 3 writer Kevin VanOrd spoke with EDGE and revealed some details about the creation of the cRPG. He talked about the reputation system: characters can approve or disapprove of the protagonist's actions (this affects their attitude towards the protagonist).
Players in Baldur's Gate 3 were given a lot of freedom, and it is hardly possible to make separate reactions to all possible events. To solve this problem, the developers came up with a reputation system:
We can't make every character react to every situation — otherwise we would be developing the game forever
Such reactions like "character approves / disapproves" helped the developers of Baldur's Gate 3 to show what the characters feel without resorting to writing new dialogues.
