Baldur's Gate 3 Development Could Have Gone On "Forever," But the Reputation System Helped Solve Many Problems

The developers managed to show the reactions of the characters without resorting to writing additional dialogues.

Recently, Baldur's Gate 3 writer Kevin VanOrd spoke with EDGE and revealed some details about the creation of the cRPG. He talked about the reputation system: characters can approve or disapprove of the protagonist's actions (this affects their attitude towards the protagonist).

Players in Baldur's Gate 3 were given a lot of freedom, and it is hardly possible to make separate reactions to all possible events. To solve this problem, the developers came up with a reputation system:

We can't make every character react to every situation — otherwise we would be developing the game forever

Such reactions like "character approves / disapproves" helped the developers of Baldur's Gate 3 to show what the characters feel without resorting to writing new dialogues.
