Valve writer Erik Wolpaw, known for his work on Half-Life 2, Left 4 Dead, Portal 2, and Half-Life: Alyx, spoke about the first experiments with artificial intelligence in game development. He shared the details on The MinnMaxx Show podcast.

According to Mr. Wolpaw, the main interest lies in the application of technology in the game scenario — in particular, to create more realistic reactions of characters to the player's actions.

Traditionally, the behavior of non-player characters is based on pre-written scenarios and conditions. For example, Left 4 Dead used a "matrix" system, where lines are activated under certain combinations of events. However, AI, according to the writer, is able to significantly expand these capabilities.

Wolpaw cited the example of a hypothetical Grand Theft Auto-level game, where artificial intelligence could react in real time not only to the player's actions, but also to his statements, creating more lively and unpredictable situations. He noted that AI is good at improvising and is able to adapt to the "chaotic" behavior of the user.

At the same time, the developer emphasized that the best results are achieved not with full AI autonomy, but in collaboration with a human. In such conditions, the writer sets the foundation and writes key lines, and the AI complements them, helping to create new interesting game situations.

At the same time, Wolpaw spoke out against using AI as a tool to reduce costs and replace employees. He is also skeptical about the idea of fully entrusting the technology with writing dialogues or voicing characters. Instead, the writer sees the potential of AI in creating new types of gameplay that were previously impossible.
