The developers focused on control settings and prepared ready-made schemes for popular controllers.
1C Game Studios continues to talk about "Korea. IL-2 Series". Recently, the developers decided to talk about their approach to creating the interface and controls.
They set themselves the task of making it easier for new players to get started with the game and lower the entry barrier, while maintaining "authenticity for connoisseurs of joysticks with throttles, pedals and similar equipment":
The task of simplifying something inherently complex without losing detail and variability a priori sounds like something impossible. It is made even more difficult by our goal of ensuring convenient aircraft control not only with classic joysticks, but also with gamepads. All this is necessary in order to make it easier for new players to start using the game, lower the entry barrier, and ultimately expand the boundaries of our special genre. In the past, many teams, including us, have "broken their teeth" on this task. However, this time, thanks to modern approaches to creating a user interface, we were able to find and implement its solution.
In "Korea. IL-2 Series", the developers completely revised the studio's existing approach, removed a lot of restrictions, and made a convenient and understandable settings interface.
Some improvements and new features:
- now you can assign an unlimited number of buttons to one command
- for "one-time" commands, you can assign not only buttons, but also extreme positions of device axes.
- when assigning a device axis to a function, you can set an "additive" mode for it, which is especially useful for controlling the view using gamepad mini-sticks
- small mini-sticks are now quite applicable for controlling the positions of engine speed levers, mixture, radiators, trimmers, etc.
- added a function for automatically filling in the assignments of the so-called "hat", or "POV switch", to view commands — players will only need to specify one direction, and the rest will be filled in automatically.
- added a much more advanced system for adjusting axis response curves.
- added a system for searching for already assigned commands by pressing a button or by their name.
The developers also created a new system for an assistant for setting up controls in the form of a "wizard":
This wizard will guide you step by step, in the most convenient and understandable way, to assign the main game and aircraft control commands to the buttons and axes of the new device. The setup will proceed from the most basic control commands to more specific ones. The algorithm has various variations depending on the configuration of your devices, offering the most convenient paths for your particular case.
The developers have created sets of default templates for different devices. It is expected that in most cases, when first entering "Korea. IL-2 Series", the user will immediately be offered a ready-made control scheme for his device:
We managed to collect more than 50 devices of various types that are popular among players in "Great Battles", and we created our own template for each of them. These are joysticks, throttle quadrants, pedals, gamepads. And only particularly complex and expensive customizable devices, which have various layout options, did not allow us to implement standardized templates for them.
