Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced plans to acquire Cinemersive Labs, a British studio specializing in machine learning and computer vision. The deal is not aimed at expanding the number of game studios, but at strengthening the company's research direction.
Upon completion of the deal, the Cinemersive Labs team will join the Visual Computing Group division, which is engaged in developments in the field of neural networks, machine learning, and advanced visualization technologies. Sony emphasized that they continue to look for new ways to improve graphics and create a deeper immersion effect in games.
Cinemersive Labs was founded in 2022 and develops technologies that can transform ordinary two-dimensional images into volumetric 3D scenes with a presence effect. It is expected that the company's developments will help improve the visual quality of games, including more advanced rendering methods and increased detail.
Sony notes that the integration of machine learning technologies will allow achieving a new level of visual fidelity. Similar developments are already reflected in solutions such as PSSR — an AI-based upscaling technology that improves resolution and image quality.
Although the results of the deal are unlikely to be noticeable in the short term, it is expected that Cinemersive Labs' developments may form the basis of future company projects, including software for the next generation of PlayStation consoles.
