The animated film "Super Mario: Galactic Cinema" started in the American box office with $34.5 million on its first day, showing the best daily result of 2026. At the same time, the amount was achieved without taking into account previews. For comparison, "Project 'End of the World'" with Ryan Gosling raised $33 million with them in mind, and "The Super Mario Brothers in the Cinema" in 2023 started with $31 million.
The global start was also strong. Outside the US, the film earned another $33.9 million, bringing total revenue for the first day to $68.4 million.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal is counting on $186 million for the first five days of release in the US. Some theater owners call a more optimistic figure - about $200 million. In international markets, the film is predicted to earn another $175 million on its debut weekend. With this scenario, it could become the highest-grossing release of the year to date.
At the same time, critics received the sequel weaker than the first part. If the original has 46 points on Metacritic and 59% on Rotten Tomatoes, then the sequel has about 35 points and 42%. However, the audience reaction remains high: about 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.8 on Metacritic versus 95% and 8.1 for the first part.
In Russian cinemas, "Super Mario: Galactic Cinema" starts on April 9.
