In an interview with Empire, Steven Spielberg highly praised Zack Cregger's film 'Weapons' and admitted that the film has effectively killed his desire to make horror films himself.
"I haven't made horror films yet, although I've always wanted to and maybe someday I will. But there have already been a lot of great horror films that completely satisfy that need. When I see a film like 'Weapons,' I don't feel like making something myself. I watch 'Weapons' and I don't want to make a film that would be as scary or even scarier. It satisfies me so much that it literally extinguishes my desire to ever make a truly frightening film."
Cregger previously directed 'Barbarian,' and his next project will be a new adaptation of Resident Evil. The director has already stated that he is not going to directly adapt the Capcom games and plans to offer his own take on the franchise.
The project remains largely a mystery. However, after test screenings, journalists compared it to 'Mad Max: Fury Road,' but in a horror format. The film spends almost no time on exposition, and the story is told through a series of action scenes. The film itself feels like playing a game, where the main character acts as a kind of player avatar, which correlates with the director's previous statements.
The premiere of the new Resident Evil adaptation is scheduled for September 18, 2026.
