In an interview with Empire, Steven Spielberg called Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" films some of his favorite science fiction films of all time. He especially highlighted the second part, noting that he considers it the best work of the Canadian director. He also admitted that he is looking forward to the third part, which should complete the story, and hopes to see the film before its official release.
"Lately, I've really been enjoying the 'Dune' films. They are some of my favorite science fiction films—not just recently, but of all time. Especially the second part. I think [the second 'Dune'] is the best film Denis has ever made. I'm looking forward to the third. I'm sure he'll show it to me early. I'm a big fan of his."
Spielberg also compared Villeneuve's approach to adapting Frank Herbert's novels to how another modern master works with literary source material:
"I love the books [of the 'Dune' cycle] and I think his respect for them is similar to how Guillermo del Toro treated Mary Shelley in 'Frankenstein.' He honored Mary Shelley in the same way that, in my opinion, Denis honored Frank Herbert."
The final part of Villeneuve's trilogy will be released on December 18, 2026, and will complete the series of adaptations of Frank Herbert's novels. After that, the director will take on the reboot of "James Bond."
