Less than a month remains until the release of «Mortal Kombat 2», and the first forecasts of opening weekend collections are already appearing. According to Box Office Pro, the film may collect from $50 to $65 million in its debut weekend in North America.
This result significantly exceeds the start of the original 2021 film, which earned $23.3 million in the USA in its first weekend and eventually grossed $84.4 million worldwide. It is important to consider the context: «Mortal Kombat» was released at the height of the pandemic and was simultaneously available on HBO Max, which affected its box office performance.
Now the situation with cinemas is different, and interest in the sequel is fueled by the increased scale and the creators' statements about «working on mistakes» — in the sequel, the titular tournament, after which the franchise got its name, will finally begin in full. Also, according to a recent Fandango poll, the film ranks eighth among the most anticipated releases of the summer season. And earlier, Karl Urban, who plays Johnny Cage, also noted that the film was enthusiastically received at test screenings and called it «the best video game adaptation».
Simon McQuoid, who worked on the first part, is again the director of the sequel. The script was written by Jeremy Slater. In addition to Karl Urban, the cast includes Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks and Tati Gabrielle.
The world premiere of «Mortal Kombat 2» will take place on May 6, 2026.
