Microsoft is preparing to showcase the game on April 16, 2026, as part of the Xbox First Look. The project will be the fourth main installment in the series from 4A Games and a direct continuation of the events of Metro Exodus.
According to the leak, the game will take place in 2039, 25 years after the nuclear war. Survivors still live in the tunnels of the Moscow Metro, but the situation is changing: different factions are united by one leader – the fanatical Spartan Hunter. However, instead of peace, he establishes a regime based on propaganda, fear, and preparation for war for the surface.
The story will also focus on a Mysterious Stranger who lives far from the city and suffers from terrible nightmares. When the past forces him out of hiding, he sets off for the ruined Moscow and returns to the Metro, a place he has been trying to avoid.
Judging by the description, 4A Games is retaining the key elements of the series. Metro 2039 will remain a story-driven single-player shooter with an emphasis on survival, exploration, stealth, and combat in a dangerous world.
