A new interview with Fallout: New Vegas and Planescape: Torment writer Chris Avellone has recently surfaced.

During a conversation with TKs-Mantis, he revealed that Baldur's Gate 3 could have been made by Obsidian. However, the project was shut down at an early stage:

Baldur's Gate 3 was canceled due to an accounting error, which, in my opinion, looks rather suspicious on the part of Interplay [which published the first parts of Baldur's Gate]. As I understand it, the payment was not sent to the correct recipients. And as soon as Baldur's Gate 3 was canceled, the entire project team switched to working on Van Buren.

Van Buren (Fallout 3) also ultimately did not reach release. Subsequently, the new Fallout was made by Bethesda, and Baldur's Gate 3 was created by the Larian Studios team, which is currently working on Divinity.
