For several years, there had been talk that Halo might receive a battle royale-style mode — either as a standalone game or as part of a larger project. However, it is claimed that this concept did not move forward and was reconsidered. Now, sources of the reliable insider Rebs Gaming say that the project codenamed Ekur was being developed specifically as an extraction shooter at least until the end of summer 2023.

Certain Affinity was working on Ekur together with Halo Studios. There were also reports that in 2024 the project was effectively canceled or rebooted with a new direction — which indirectly supports the current rumors about a concept change.

The insider also claims that Project Ekur may become the next multiplayer project in the Halo universe. At the same time, there is an alternative version: the mode may have been integrated into the next major installment of the franchise, making it not a standalone game but part of a larger product.

Moreover, according to rumors, Xbox is considering a model similar to the modern Call of Duty ecosystem — a single launcher combining the campaign, classic multiplayer, and various modes. As an example, the setup with Call of Duty: Warzone is cited, where users select the desired game format from one application.
