An updated DRM system for game protection was noticed on Sony consoles.

Recently, dataminer Lance McDonald drew the attention of the PlayStation community to the fact that Sony has implemented an updated DRM system to protect digital copies of games. According to him, the company will now regularly conduct online checks. To pass it, players will have to connect the console to Sony servers.

If the check fails, access to the game may be temporarily blocked — until players connect the device to the servers:

DRM protection has been implemented in PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games purchased digitally. Now each such game requires an online check every 30 days. If you bought a digital copy of the game and do not connect the console to the Internet for 30 days, your license will be revoked.

According to Lance McDonald, the new DRM system on PlayStation started working with recently acquired games and did not affect previous purchases. This system is presented not only on PS5, but also on older PS4 consoles.

There is currently no way to bypass the license block after 30 days without connecting to Sony servers. Activating the console as "primary" does not help.

Does it play? quotes an "anonymous insider" who claims this is not a new protection system, but an error during an update:

The DRM issue with Sony was unintentional. As far as we could tell, Sony accidentally broke something while fixing a vulnerability. They have known about the confusing interface for some time, but did not consider it a problem that needed urgent attention.
