Steam Deck 2 already in development: Valve reveals first details

Rumors about a new device have been circulating for a long time, but now there is official confirmation. In an interview with IGN, Pierre-Loup Griffais from Valve stated that the company is indeed making the next portable PC.

The release date has not been announced. According to Griffais, all previous devices, from the Steam Controller and Steam Machine to the Steam Deck, have been part of a single path leading to the creation of a new version.

We are working hard on it [on Steam Deck 2 – ed.]. And, if you look at our hardware projects over the years, you can see a clear continuity – from the first Steam Controller and Steam Machine console to the Steam Deck and this year's devices. We expect Steam Deck 2 to be very similar in many ways, and current developments will provide experience for its creation.

The main thing is that Valve does not want to release a simple update. The company abandoned the idea of a device with a small increase in power with the same battery life.

We are not interested in a situation where we offer 20, 30, or even 50 percent more performance with the same battery life.

This means that the release may be delayed. Valve is waiting for new chips to appear that will provide a noticeable leap.

We are guided by progress in chips and architecture. We already have an understanding of the next Steam Deck, but there are no SoCs on the market yet that would provide truly next-generation Steam Deck performance.

Steam Deck 2 is in development, but the company is not rushing – betting on a qualitative leap, not a slight upgrade.
