Windrose - an unexpected Steam hit: game from Uzbekistan earned $30 million in 10 days
The pirate survival game Windrose from the Uzbek studio Kraken Express proved that a hit doesn't need a big budget.
In just 10 days after its early access release, the project attracted over 1.3 million players and generated approximately $30 million in revenue. This is the best release in the genre on Steam since Palworld – according to Alinea Analytics.
The result is impressive, although still far from Palworld (12 million copies in 9 days). However, Windrose is selling faster than other recent survival games – better than Dune: Awakening, and more than twice as fast as RuneScape: Dragonwilds, StarRupture, and Grounded 2.
Success was ensured by strategy and quality. The developers focused on an affordable price and promotion through content creators specializing in survival, MMO, and pirate themes. Steam Next Fest played an important role – the 6-hour demo was added to the wishlists of 474 thousand users in a month. Peak online reached 211,127 players.
Windrose combines exploration, base building, challenging souls-lite combat elements, and co-op for up to 4 players. According to Alinea Analytics, 60% of players previously played Valheim, 56% – The Forest, 48% – Palworld, and almost 40% – Sea of Thieves.
