The Last of Us Online was "the best multiplayer game." Naughty Dog developers admired the project

The Last of Us Online, which was canceled at the last minute by Sony Interactive Entertainment, was a promising project, according to the developers.

Work on the game, according to early reports, was at an advanced stage. However, Sony decided to abandon the project – further support would require large investments, and the company did not want to turn Naughty Dog into a live-service game studio.

Vineet Agarwal, the head of the canceled project, returned to the topic. He said that many former colleagues still write to him about The Last of Us Online and call it the best multiplayer game they have ever played.

It's incredible how many of my former colleagues still write to me, saying how fantastic TLOU Online was – they still consider it the best multiplayer game they've ever played. I will never again allow a project I'm working on not to see the light of day. Thank you all for your support and trust!

The game grew out of the Fractures mode, which was being developed for The Last of Us Part II, and then evolved into a full-fledged online project. According to Agarwal, it was about 80% complete and close to release.

The cancellation was a painful decision for the team.
