Sony almost canceled Uncharted 4 - the game was saved at the last minute
Uncharted 4: A Thief's End might not have been released at all. This was revealed by senior lighting artist Gabriel Betancourt in an interview with Kiwi Talkz.
According to him, after almost three years of development, Sony Interactive Entertainment issued a harsh ultimatum: fix the project urgently or lose funding.
The main problem was the studio's internal culture. The management was surrounded by "sycophants," causing the team to lose control over the quality of the prototype.
Only when another director called the game version "lousy" did Sony's patience run out. After that, Sony intervened: the previous management was removed, and the project was handed over to Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley, who had worked on The Last of Us. They made a radical decision – essentially remaking the game from scratch.
The rescue took another three years, and the entire development took about six years. As a result, the game received 93 points on Metacritic and became one of the symbols of PS4.
But success came hard. Straley soon left Naughty Dog, admitting that the stress and burnout from the project's "reboot" were too strong.
