Nintendo and Illumination are working on an animated film about Donkey Kong's adventures - rumor

According to the updated release schedule of Universal Pictures Spain for the period from April 2026 to July 2030, the list includes "UNTITLED ILLUMINATION/NINTENDO EVENT FILM (APRIL 2028)". The release date is indicated as April 12, 2028, but the entry is highlighted in red, which may mean a possible change in timing.

Despite the lack of official confirmations, the very fact that the project appeared in the distributor's plans indicates that the cooperation between Nintendo, Illumination, and Universal continues.

Recall that the companies' previous joint projects showed impressive results: the first film became the highest-grossing video game adaptation, and its sequel grossed about $190 million in just five days of theatrical release in the United States.

Network users are already actively discussing which franchise the new film might be dedicated to. Among the most popular versions is a separate project about Donkey Kong's adventures.
