Gabe Newell Revealed as Key OpenAI Investor - Details Emerge
During the legal proceedings between Elon Musk and Sam Altman, details about OpenAI's early history have come to light.
Although most of the documents concern the conflict between the founders, one fact surprised the gaming community. It turned out that Gabe Newell, the creator of Valve and the Steam platform, was one of the key investors and an informal advisor to the company during a period when almost no one believed in its success.
From the published letters and documents from 2016–2020, it follows that Newell not only monitored the project but also supported it financially. In 2018, he transferred $20,008,279 to OpenAI. This was the second-largest private investment at the time, second only to Elon Musk's contributions.
The documents also refer to Newell as an “informal advisor.” This indicates that his experience in creating digital platforms might have influenced the development of OpenAI's technologies. Previously, his involvement was only mentioned in passing, but now the true scale of his contribution has become known.
