James Gunn Announces "Lanterns" Premiere Date and Reveals New Still - Now with Green Color
The DC series about Hal Jordan and John Stewart will premiere on HBO Max on August 16.
James Gunn confirmed the premiere date for the "Lanterns" series. The DC Studios project will be released on HBO Max on August 16, 2026. Along with the date, Gunn published a new promotional still: it shows one of the heroes charging his ring from a Green Lantern battery.
The still appeared shortly after HBO removed the series' teaser. The video was criticized for its brown palette and lack of the signature green color. The new promo has plenty of green, which, however, did not stop users from joking: perhaps this is the only time viewers will see it.
"Lanterns" will tell the story of John Stewart and Hal Jordan, played by Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler. According to the official description, a new recruit to the Corps and a legendary Lantern investigate a murder in rural America, and the case gradually leads them to a larger mystery related to the future of the DC cinematic universe.
Showrunner Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and comic book writer Tom King are working on "Lanterns." The first two episodes were directed by James Hawes, known for the series "Snowpiercer," "Slow Horses," and "Raised by Wolves." Nathan Fillion will also appear in the series as Guy Gardner.
