Court Sentences Russian for Stealing GTA Online and Roblox Accounts
Cybercrimes have real consequences. Law enforcement was able to track down the hacker.
It recently became known that a young man from Veliky Novgorod was found guilty of stealing accounts in popular online games.
The Mash Telegram channel drew attention to the court's verdict. 19-year-old Russian Kirill was sentenced to one year of restricted freedom. He is now forbidden to leave the city and must report regularly. In addition, the laptop he used to steal accounts was confiscated.
The attacker downloaded viruses and then posted them in the descriptions of game videos on YouTube. In the videos themselves, potential victims were promised guides on leveling up, but the links actually led to malicious software. After installing the software, the hacker gained access to other people's game accounts, for example, in Grand Theft Auto Online and Roblox.
Such accounts can be sold on the black market. The cost depends on the level of progression, and on certain platforms, the price of such digital goods starts from a thousand rubles.
Earlier, the media drew attention to the fact that the publisher of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 was fined several million rubles in Russia — the company did not localize Russian user data.
