Todd Garner, producer of "Mortal Kombat 2", spoke frankly about the problems of the 2021 film. According to him, Warner Bros. underestimated the potential of the "Mortal Kombat" reboot and allocated a modest budget for it.
"To be blunt, when we made the first movie, the studio didn't understand what they had. So we spent about 75% of the time in the same fighting pit — simply because of the budget."
Even with limitations, the first installment was a notable success, primarily on streaming: "Mortal Kombat" became the most-watched film on HBO Max in 2021, surpassing "Godzilla vs. Kong" and "Zack Snyder's Justice League".
The team tried to fix this problem in the sequel. As the producer explained, one of the tasks was to show different worlds and locations familiar to fans. More funds were allocated for production: the estimated budget for "Mortal Kombat 2" is $68 million, compared to $55 million for the first film.
"Mortal Kombat 2" will be released in cinemas on May 8, 2026.
