A study conducted by Kantar and the University of California, Berkeley, among players from the US, UK, and Australia, showed that 62% of hardcore gamers no longer buy games at full price upon release.

The generational difference is particularly noticeable. Among millennials, 38% continue to buy games at full price, among Generation Z — 42%, while for Generation X, this figure is only 20%.

The Games Business co-founder Christopher Dring explained the change in habits by the enormous amount of available content. According to him, players today have too many choices of what to watch, read, and play.

In addition, Dring noted that modern games are often released in an unfinished state and require subsequent updates, so users no longer feel the need to buy them immediately after release.
