Microsoft Prepares Xbox Green Leaf - A Response to Steam Deck and Portable PS6
Microsoft has not abandoned the portable direction but has decided to take a different path than Sony. According to insiders, the company is developing the Xbox Green Leaf project, a system to improve the performance of Windows-based handhelds and close the gap with Steam Deck.
Sony, according to rumors, is betting on a closed ecosystem for the portable PS6, while Microsoft wants to implement energy-saving technologies directly into the Xbox Game Development Kit. This will allow developers to use new tools in games for Xbox and Windows.
According to information from the Moore's Law is Dead channel, the project includes two modes – Power Optimized and Power Optimized Plus. This is not about simple settings for players. Developers will be able to automatically reduce resolution or limit performance in scenes where the device's full power is not needed, for example, in menus, lobbies, or cutscenes.
Initial tests are reportedly successful. In some games, including Fortnite, Xbox Green Leaf allegedly provides up to 30% battery savings.
Microsoft's main goal is not only to release its own device but to develop the entire category of portable Windows devices. One of the main problems with such systems remains poor battery life, and Green Leaf should help increase operating time without significant loss of image quality.
According to rumors, the first version of the project will be presented as early as May or June 2026.
