"Unique and Original Horror": First Reviews of The Backrooms Adaptation Emerge
A24's horror film based on the creepypasta and Kane Parsons' web series will be released in Russia on June 4.
The first reactions to "The Backrooms Reality" – A24's adaptation of The Backrooms – have appeared online. After the world premiere, viewers and journalists began sharing their impressions on social media, and most of the reviews were overwhelmingly positive. Kane Parsons' film is called "unique," "truly original," and one of the most unsettling horror films of recent years, which "gets under your skin and stays there for a long time."
The film is praised for its visual effects, "insane" musical number, numerous references, and minimal jump scares. Among the weaknesses, general confusion and dialogue are most often mentioned. Some viewers claim that the film will require a long time to process and discuss in order to fully understand what is happening.
The Backrooms originated from an internet creepypasta about "wrong" zones of reality, where a person can accidentally fall into and get stuck among endless yellow rooms, humming lamps, and corridors with no exit. In 2022, Kane Parsons launched a web series of the same name on YouTube, and later the theme spread to games: among the most famous examples is the cooperative horror game Escape the Backrooms.
According to the film's plot, Chiwetel Ejiofor's character finds a passage to a strange dimension and ends up in a labyrinth of rooms with broken spatial logic. The cast also includes Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell, and Avan Jogia. Kane Parsons himself directed, and James Wan and Michael Clear from Atomic Monster are among the producers.
In Russian cinemas, "The Backrooms Reality" will be officially released by "Volga". The premiere will take place on June 4, 2026.
