The original game's writer brought sad news for fans of the cosmic horror.

The Dead Space franchise, which many consider one of the most iconic horror series in the gaming industry, seems to have finally become a thing of the past. Despite the success of the first part's remake, released in 2023 by Motive Studio, the chances of the series continuing remain extremely low.

This was revealed by one of the original writers and producers of the series, Chuck Beaver, in a new interview. According to him, fans should not expect a full return of the franchise after the remake. Although talks about a continuation have been ongoing for a long time, reports emerged in 2024 that the Dead Space 2 remake never received approval from Electronic Arts. Later, it also became known that the idea of Dead Space 4 was proposed to EA management, but the project was rejected.

According to Beaver, the situation primarily boils down to development economics. He noted that he understands the publisher's position and the reasons why even Motive Studio, after a successful remake, did not receive the “green light” for new projects in the series.

“The problem is in the numbers,” the developer admitted. According to him, horror games have a certain commercial ceiling. During the time of former EA Vice President Frank Gibeau, about 5 million copies sold were enough for the series to continue. Now, given the sharply increased budgets, publishers' expectations are significantly higher.

Beaver clarified that the figure of 15 million copies is more of a benchmark for modern AAA games, although he considers even sales of 7 million to be a very good result for a horror game. However, the Dead Space remake, according to available data, sold just over 2 million copies. For most projects, this would be a decent result, but, apparently, for EA, it was not enough to justify the development of new installments.
