Sony reveals PS Plus strategy. AAA games will not be released on day one
Sony announced that only 4-6 games per year will be released on PS Plus, mostly indie projects. This was stated by Kris Svensson, who is responsible for third-party content at Sony.
This week alone, Xbox Game Pass is releasing 4 games available on day one. Microsoft has been building its subscription around premieres, major launches, and regular new releases for several years. Sony does not plan to follow the same path with PS Plus.
We don't offer many day-one projects. These are mostly indie games, and we're probably talking about 4–6 such projects a year.
This confirms that Sony is building PS Plus differently from how Microsoft builds its Game Pass. PS Plus Essential mainly offers older games monthly, PS Plus Extra expands the library of already released projects, and PS Plus Premium adds classic games.
Sometimes there are exceptions. Stray and Blue Prince were released on PS Plus on day one and showed that Sony can use the subscription to promote smaller projects. However, one should not expect major PlayStation Studios games to be included.
Svensson noted that games for PS Plus are selected manually. The company chooses projects that are suitable for the service and can benefit from an additional audience.
