Peter Jackson explained why he didn't direct the film "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum". During an interview at the Cannes Film Festival, the director of the original trilogy admitted that he could have taken on the project himself, but decided to hand it over to Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in previous films.
Jackson explained this by saying that the film will largely focus on Gollum's inner world, and Serkis knows this character better than anyone else.
"It's an internal story about Gollum's psychology and his addiction. It's Gollum's personal story. Andy knows this guy better than anyone else."
At the same time, Jackson remained on the project as a producer. He emphasized that he tries not to interfere with Serkis's work and is ready to help only when necessary.
The premiere of "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum" is scheduled for December 17, 2027.
