Developers are desperately trying to retain the game's audience.

Marathon Game Director Joe Ziegler published a lengthy address to the community, discussing the future of the shooter and the developers' plans for the second season. The main news was the confirmation of a full-fledged PvE mode — without mandatory PvP battles.

According to Ziegler, two experimental modes will appear in Marathon's second season. The first will launch at the beginning of the season and will offer "a small dose of PvP," but will focus primarily on PvE content. The second mode will be entirely PvE-oriented: players will team up, complete cooperative tasks, and gradually progress between matches.

For some of Marathon's audience, such a decision might seem controversial, as the game was initially built around intense PvPvE mechanics. However, many players welcomed the news as a chance to experience the project's strengths — gunplay, visual style, and sound design — without the constant pressure of PvP.

Ziegler emphasized that Bungie views the new modes as experiments. In the future, the studio plans to continue adding temporary queues and unusual formats, possibly including more "pure" PvP modes. Some of these ideas may eventually become a permanent part of the game.

The updates appear to be Bungie's attempt to retain Marathon's audience after a decline in player activity shortly after release.
