AMD's Vice President of Computing and Graphics, Jack Huynh, announced long-awaited news for owners of previous generation Radeon graphics cards – FSR 4.1 upscaling technology with AI support will be available not only on RDNA 4, but also on RDNA 3 and RDNA 2.
FSR 4 is considered a significant step forward compared to FSR 3.1. The technology noticeably improves image quality, especially at 1080p and 1440p resolutions, reducing motion blur and artifacts. Previously, FSR 4 was exclusive to RDNA 4 and graphics cards like the Radeon RX 9070 XT, as it used second-generation AI accelerators with FP8 support.
Now AMD is adapting the technology for older hardware with an INT8-based version, which will allow FSR 4.1 to run even on the first generation of Radeon AI blocks.
Portable gaming devices such as ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X, Lenovo Legion Go, MSI Claw A8, and Valve's upcoming Steam Machine could benefit most from the update. However, the Xbox Series X is named as the main potential beneficiary.
Microsoft's console is built on a full RDNA 2 architecture, unlike the PlayStation 5, so theoretically it could receive native FSR 4.1 support. This could be analogous to the visual leap that Sony implemented in the PlayStation 5 Pro thanks to its proprietary PSSR AI technology.
If FSR 4.1 indeed comes to Xbox Series X, the console will be able to deliver sharper and more detailed 4K images with less blur. According to analysts, this will allow Xbox to approach the level of PS5 Pro without releasing new hardware.
