200 Thousand Copies in 2 Weeks. Is the Chess Roguelike Gambonanza Following in Balatro's Footsteps?

Another unexpected hit has emerged in the indie market. Gambonanza, already compared to Balatro, sold over 200 thousand copies in two weeks. The game, with its unusual interpretation of chess, has become one of May's most successful indie releases.

The indie scene regularly releases projects that suddenly become big hits and set new standards for the genre. In 2024, Balatro became such a phenomenon, and now Gambonanza has captured players' attention.

Previously, it was reported that the game surpassed 100 thousand copies sold, but now the result has doubled. Gambonanza has already sold over 200 thousand copies, with 130 thousand on Steam and the rest for mobile devices. The project has become one of the biggest indie hits of the month.

The project is inspired by chess but offers a more modern and unconventional approach to the familiar concept. However, the game has technical and gameplay issues, which resulted in less-than-perfect ratings on Steam – 75% positive reviews after 1070 reviews.

The developer thanked players with a message:

My game has reached 200,000 copies sold 🎉🎉!! This feels so unreal! Thank you for the love, streams, and crazy builds! It means everything to me.
