Director of "Drive" Nicolas Winding Refn Dreams of Directing a Batgirl Film
The creator of "The Neon Demon" believes Batgirl perfectly suits his style.
Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn, known for films like "Drive" and "The Neon Demon," recently premiered his new film "Her Only Hell" starring Sophie Thatcher and Charles Melton. On the occasion of the film's premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, Refn spoke with Deadline and, among other things, admitted that he would like to direct a film about Batgirl. The director explained his interest in the character through aesthetics.
"The costumes – I love the aesthetic. In many ways, 'Her Only Hell' reflects my obsession with dolls, objects, and how to move people through space and time. I love the objectification of objects, superheroes, comic books, and this entire subculture. I come from there. I collect Japanese toys and love playing with Lego."
It's hard to say whether DC Studios plans to bring Batgirl back to the screens. In 2022, Warner Bros. canceled an already filmed movie about the heroine and wrote it off as a tax deduction. This decision is still considered one of the most controversial moves of the David Zaslav era. After James Gunn and Peter Safran took over the DCU, there has been no news about a solo Batgirl film.
