Civilization VII has surpassed 15,000 concurrent players on Steam for the first time in over a year following the release of the Test of Time update, which significantly revamped key strategy mechanics and attracted a wave of returning players.

The premiere of the Test of Time update was a significant event for Civilization VII fans. According to SteamDB, after the patch's release, the game's online player count rose to 15,207 and remains stable for now.

The update seriously changed the gameplay – now players can complete the entire campaign with one civilization without starting over mid-game.

Reviews on Steam remain mixed, but opinions on the update are mostly positive. One review states:

For the last 15 months, the game felt like it was in early access. I can finally say that patch 1.4 changed that. After Test of Time, I can finally recommend this game. The new maps and victory conditions are some of the most interesting in the series. [...] I want to play until night with the "just one more turn" syndrome.

The update also added a new victory type, a free leader, and an improved map generator. Firaxis stated that this is not the last update and the studio is working on additional content.

Civilization VII is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
