According to Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, Bungie is preparing for “significant” layoffs after finishing work on Destiny 2. Sources note that the team working on the game does not yet have a next project, and Destiny 3 has not entered active development.
According to people who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press, the company does not plan a new project for the Destiny 2 development team after the game's completion next month. They claim Bungie does not plan to immediately begin production on Destiny 3. The number of layoffs is unknown.
Bloomberg reports that the new installment of the series has not even received official approval for development. The studio is primarily focused on finding new ideas, including projects within the Destiny universe, but none of them have received a green light yet.
Bungie is currently betting on Marathon. However, the game did not show the expected results after its release, and part of the Destiny team has already been transferred to support it.
The situation remains tense for Sony, which acquired Bungie for $3.6 billion as a key player in the games-as-a-service segment. Bloomberg also recalled the canceled Payback project, which was considered an evolution of the Destiny universe.
After the release of The Final Shape expansion, Destiny 2's audience began to decline, and even a recent Star Wars-themed update did not bring back previous interest.
