Bungie recently announced its decision to end content support for Destiny 2. The last content update for the looter-shooter will be released next month.
Fans were not thrilled with the developers' statement and decided to express themselves in Steam reviews — not only on the Destiny 2 page itself, but also in the reviews for the extraction-shooter Marathon.
Overall, Marathon received "very positive" reviews and is currently holding in the "positive" zone, but a sharp spike in negativity is visible on the graph.
Some reviews are related to Marathon itself, for example, Linux users cannot play due to the BattlEye anti-cheat, but many are specifically related to the Destiny 2 situation:
[Marathon] becomes terribly monotonous, without a doubt it's a genre for an overly niche audience. Also, because of this *****, Bungie killed Destiny 2.
I hate this game, because of it Destiny 2 was killed
Worst game of all time, worst company of all time, killed Destiny for THIS, THIS, absolute trash.
A ticking time bomb. Destiny 2 development is coming to an end. Bungie is on the verge of closure and incurring losses. Get your money back as soon as possible if you can.
At its core, it's a solid game, but the fact that for 6 years resources and attention were diverted from Destiny — without making any significant impact on the gaming industry as a whole, or a noticeable impact on the extraction genre — this fact will always haunt this project. The scandal surrounding the art direction and the decisions made by Bungie during development have caused irreparable damage to their reputation and to Marathon itself.
In response to this bombardment of negative reviews, Marathon fans launched their own — calling for positive reviews.
Bungie has promised to ensure that Destiny 2 remains accessible and fans can continue to play.
