Creator of Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced explained the rejection of modernity and the small amount of new content

As the release approaches, new details of the AC IV: Black Flag remake are being revealed. It is already known that the creators will add new content to Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, such as additional quests, but material from DLCs, like Freedom Cry, will not return.

Recently, the remake's creative director, Paul Fu, gave an interview to IGN and explained the small amount of new content by technical limitations — the project is based on the Anvil engine, which was used for Assassin's Creed Shadows:

We definitely considered adding content from DLCs such as Freedom Cry, but from the very beginning, we understood that in terms of creating a remake, Black Flag would be one of the most difficult parts in the entire Assassin's Creed franchise. There are many reasons for this. First of all, the game world is huge — it's a specially constructed map, the operation of which requires a large number of technologies that practically no longer exist. We could not reuse old technologies [from AC IV: Black Flag].

Underwater and surface gameplay had to be seamless. Developers had to expand the underwater component and create new tools:

For example, we needed to be able to program a more reactive shark [improve its behavior, reaction to player actions], which was not in the Anvil engine at that time [...] Therefore, we very carefully controlled the scope of the project, and that's why we decided to focus on Edward Kenway's main story.

Another significant difference between Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced and Black Flag is the rejection of modern-day moments. Paul Fu, in an interview with VGC, explained that keeping such elements in the game might seem inappropriate compared to how it is implemented in new parts of the franchise (where this topic is almost not touched upon):

We felt that the right decision would be to move in the direction of Assassin's Creed: Shadows. The Animus has evolved so much in recent years that it would be strange to change the chosen direction of work.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is scheduled for release on July 9, 2026.
