Publisher Arc System Works and developer UnitePlus have unveiled the official pre-release trailer for River City Saga: Journey to the West. This is a new installment in the long-running franchise, where the iconic heroes of the classic beat 'em up Kunio-kun will take on the roles of characters from the famous Chinese epic "Journey to the West."
The project will be a spiritual successor to River City Saga: Three Kingdoms, but will change the approach to gameplay — this time, players can expect a single-player action game with roguelite elements. At the start, players will have access to Sun Wukong, and as they progress, new playable fighters with their unique styles will unlock: Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing. Naturally, the game will retain the series' signature, deliberately unserious and absurd humor.
River City Saga: Journey to the West is scheduled for release on June 4, 2026. The game will be available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
