Square Enix has confirmed that the role-playing game Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age — Definitive Edition will be released on Nintendo Switch 2 in September 2026. However, fans' joy was quickly overshadowed by the release details: the announcement gathered a whole "bingo" of controversial decisions from recent years.

The publisher completely abandoned the upgrade system. While other companies are often criticized even for a paid transition to a new generation (e.g., for $10), Square Enix went further: it will not be possible to upgrade an already purchased version for the first Switch to the Switch 2 version, even for an additional fee. The game will have to be bought again at full price for $40.

In addition, a warning about complete save incompatibility appeared in the eShop. Progress cannot be transferred to the new console, which means the grand hundred-hour adventure will have to be started from scratch.

Square Enix also decided to save on physical copies. The Switch 2 edition will be released as a "code in a box" instead of a full cartridge.

The only technical improvements announced for the Switch 2 version are standard modes with a priority on graphics or performance. Players will be able to assess how much these innovations and graphic settings justify repurchasing the game at full price in September.
