Activision has officially confirmed that the free-to-play battle royale Call of Duty: Warzone will cease support for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the coming months. Starting June 4, 2026, the game will no longer be available for download on last-generation consoles — the project will disappear from digital stores. The full server shutdown for PS4 and Xbox One will occur later this year, coinciding with the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Season 1.
The news was announced shortly after the full reveal of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Activision had previously stated that the new installment in the series would only be released on current-generation platforms, abandoning PS4 and Xbox One. However, the discontinuation of Warzone support for last-generation consoles has become a much more significant event for a huge audience of players.
For several years, Warzone remained the primary free way to continue playing Call of Duty without needing to purchase new releases or upgrade to modern hardware. The game maintained a stable audience on both eighth and ninth-generation consoles, especially amidst the constant rise in prices for gaming devices. Even the Nintendo Switch 2, which went on sale only last year, has already seen a price increase.
Now, PS4 and Xbox One owners will effectively have to switch to more modern platforms or upgrade their PCs if they want to continue playing Warzone after the launch of Modern Warfare 4 Season 1.
