A24 is preparing to release one of the most anticipated horror films of the year, "The Backrooms," on the big screen. The project, which grew out of the Backrooms web series and the creepypasta of the same name, has already received its first press reviews. Based on 68 reviews, the film's "freshness" rating on Rotten Tomatoes stands at 85%.
The film is praised for its originality and unique style, with critics noting that 20-year-old director Kane Parsons masterfully builds a claustrophobic atmosphere. At the same time, some reviewers criticize the film for its drawn-out dialogues and believe that the initially plotless concept of internet lore was difficult to stretch into a full-length feature.
"The Backrooms" tells the story of an unlucky furniture salesman, Clark, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who accidentally discovers a hidden portal in the basement of his own store. The hero falls into an endless, terrifying labyrinth of empty yellow office corridors where the usual laws of space and time do not apply. Following him into the liminal space is his therapist, Dr. Mary Kline, played by Renate Reinsve.
The premiere of "The Backrooms" in Russian cinemas will take place on June 4.
